The Waukee Brief

The Waukee Fish Finder: every pond, lake & river within reach - and what's actually swimming in each one.

The Iowa DNR knows exactly what's in these waters - it just buries the data in a clunky website. So we pulled it out. Below are the public ponds, lakes and rivers within reach of Waukee - 13 of them, from the city's own fishing ponds and the Raccoon River to the big metro lakes - each with the real fish sizes from DNR biologist surveys where they exist. Tap the fish you're after and it'll show you where to go.

The short answer

Right in town, the Triumph Park pond is stocked with bass, bluegill and catfish and has an accessible pier for the kids. Want bigger water? Blue Heron Lake in West Des Moines is the closest real lake, about 11 minutes out. Fishing a river? The Raccoon River runs right by Waukee for catfish, smallmouth and walleye. Going big with a boat? Saylorville, Big Creek and Easter Lake have walleye, catfish and more, though they're a longer haul north and east. There's no dedicated trout lake close to Waukee - the nearest is a longer drive. Use the finder below to filter by what you want to catch.

Where this data comes from

Fish sizes are from Iowa DNR Fish Iowa electrofishing surveys - biologists sampling each water and measuring what they find - plus DNR stocking records. Waukee's own city ponds are newer community waters without published survey sizes, so those cards list the stocked species without inches. Access, amenities and addresses come from the city and county park agencies that own each water (Waukee, West Des Moines, Des Moines, Pleasant Hill, Bondurant, Polk County Conservation) and, for Saylorville and Big Creek, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. These are all public, government sources - not crowd-sourced catch apps, which we avoid on purpose. Survey data tells you what's in the water and how big; it's not a log of individual catches, and clear water or timing can hide the biggest fish. Drive times are approximate from central Waukee.

Where can you catch trout near Waukee?

There's no dedicated stocked-trout lake right next to Waukee. The DNR does stock rainbow trout in the Triumph Park pond in spring and fall (Waukee's "Trick or Trout" day), but for a reliably stocked trout lake the nearest is a longer drive - Terra Lake in Johnston, roughly half an hour out. You'll need a trout fee added to your Iowa license to keep them.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes - anyone 16 or older needs an Iowa fishing license, plus a trout fee to keep trout. Kids under 16 fish free. Confirm current limits at iowadnr.gov before you go.
