The Waukee Brief
Whether you've got a big RV, a rooftop/truck camper, or just a tent, there's real camping within about 45 minutes of Waukee - and it starts right in town. Sitting on the metro's far west edge, Waukee is closer to the Raccoon River corridor than to the big northern reservoirs, so a private full-hookup park and a state park on the river come first, and the Saylorville campgrounds are more of a haul. Here they all are, with the details that actually matter: hookups (or not), showers, cabins, and whether you can book online. Filter for “Primitive / no hookups” if you're set up to go off-grid.
Closest by far is Timberline Campground, a private full-hookup RV park right in Waukee with a pool and showers. For a state park, Walnut Woods sits on the Raccoon River just southeast in West Des Moines. Want a cabin? Jester Park has four. Going rustic / no-hookup? Try Chichaqua Bottoms (drive-up + remote tent sites), Yellow Banks (primitive bluff & backpacking sites), or Hickory Grove. The four Saylorville Corps campgrounds are up on the metro's north side - a longer drive from the west edge.
Every spot above is public land you can count on. If you want private-land boondocking, farm stays, or unique overland pull-offs, those live on marketplace apps - Hipcamp, The Dyrt and iOverlander - where individual landowners list their own sites. We don't republish those private listings here, but for a rooftop or truck camper set up to go off-grid, that's where to look, alongside the rustic public sites above. Filter this finder by “Primitive / no hookups” for the no-services public options.
Site counts, hookups and amenities come from the public agencies that run each campground - the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Saylorville), the Iowa DNR (state parks), and Polk County Conservation - plus their reservation systems (Recreation.gov, the Iowa State Parks system, and MyCountyParks.com). Amenities and open dates shift season to season; confirm current details and availability when you book. Drive times are approximate from central Waukee.

Timberline Campground is right in Waukee, at 31635 Ashworth Road on the west edge of town, only about 5 minutes out - a private full-hookup RV park with a pool and showers. The nearest state park is Walnut Woods, on the Raccoon River in West Des Moines about 12 minutes southeast.
From Waukee's far-west position they're a real drive, not a quick trip - the four Corps campgrounds (Bob Shetler, Cherry Glen, Prairie Flower, Acorn Valley) and Jester Park are up on the metro's north side, roughly 30-35 minutes away. Book the Corps sites on Recreation.gov.
Jester Park has four modern rental cabins (one sleeps eight, three sleep six) with full kitchens and bathrooms - the easiest way to "camp" without a tent or RV. It's about 30 minutes north of Waukee on Saylorville's west shore.
For rustic public sites: Chichaqua Bottoms near Maxwell (drive-up non-electric plus remote tent-in spots), Yellow Banks in Pleasant Hill (primitive bluff & backpacking sites), or Hickory Grove near Colo (first-come tent-only). These sit on the metro's east and northeast sides, so figure 30-40 minutes from Waukee. For a rooftop or truck camper, filter above by "Primitive / no hookups." Private-land boondocking and unique overland spots live on apps like Hipcamp, The Dyrt and iOverlander - those are private listings, not public land.
Ledges State Park near Madrid (~30 minutes north) is worth the drive for its sandstone canyons and forest trails, with 94 campsites (40 electric).
